“T”

December 2004.  A call came in just before Christmas to ask if we could care for a young man on a ventilator, who was being cared for in Oxford and had been in hospital for two years and needed to come home.  We were asked to recruit a team of staff and organise a payroll system, and the PCT would fund the package.  Proposals were submitted to the PCT, and the client to be discharged home with a case management system.  Costs were £200,000 less per annum than those quoted by specialist agencies.  Advertisements went in, and a team recruited with a team leader, training, and a full team in place, and it was possible to get him home with a fully trained team by May 2005.  We still have the team in place.  T is now leading as normal a life as possible and is going to college, pop concerts, and even stayed away at Reading Festival with his ventilator, showing if there is a will there is a way.
