Europe - France
A young child sustained severe brain injury when the windows of opportunity to make a diagnosis, treat, and manage was missed, resulting in a medical negligence claim.
One of her greatest pleasures was to be in water. The climate in Southern France was more favourable to this home-based activity and chosen by her parents, who were familiar with the region.
She had only ever spoken English, and therefore required an English-speaking team of support workers to care for her throughout the 24-hour period. Recruitment of appropriate support workers was needed to relieve the parents of the high levels of care she required throughout the 24-hour period. Risk assessments, training, and implementation of a care and support programme, combined with provision of appropriate aids and equipment and property were required. It was necessary to identify other professionals within the locality to provide day-to-day support and guidance to the team. Neuro-therapists were identified and gradually introduced to meet her needs.
