Health, Wellness and Recovery. For those with and without Brain and Spinal Injury.

Researched backed remedies to life and associated ailments…

Now, we are deep in the belly of winter-it's a good time to share some holistic lifestyle ideas to maintain resilience and vitality when we need it most. These are worth considering whether you are a Case Manager, Solicitor, Support Worker, or Client within Personal Injury.

Magnesium Supplementation.

In 2026, many of us are aware of the importance of magnesium supplementation to support the body. It has become more crucial over the years due to intensive agricultural practices depleting soil quality and mineral content. Magnesium is integral to muscle and nerve function, heart health, sleep quality, mood, and energy production. It helps regulate calcium and vitamin D, aids recovery, and alleviates inflammation.Foods high in magnesium: Leafy greens, nuts, fatty fish, legumes, dark chocolate, avocados, bananas, yogurt.Supplementation options:
  • Magnesium chloride spray: Highly bioavailable, often used topically—great for aches, pains, and targeted relief.
  • Magnesium glycinate: Highly absorbable and gentle on the stomach; a popular choice for improving sleep, reducing anxiety, muscle relaxation, and helping detox from fertilizers, glyphosate, etc.

Sauna Use

Some of the most mind-blowing longevity statistics revolve around sauna use. A major study in Finland (Laukkanen et al., 2015, JAMA Internal Medicine) found that men who used saunas 4–7 times per week had a 40% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to those using it once a week or less, with particularly strong protection against cardiovascular risks (around 50% reduction). A later study by the same researchers linked sauna use to reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s.Research on sauna use for brain injury recovery is still emerging but promising: it improves circulation and blood flow to the brain, reduces inflammation and oxidative stress via heat shock proteins, and boosts mood, well-being, and cognition. Grounding (Earthing)

You might get some funny looks for talking about this, but research shows barefoot grounding (direct contact with the Earth) offers physiological and psychological benefits. A study in the Journal of Inflammation Research found that grounding reduces inflammation markers by transferring electrons from the Earth to neutralize free radicals.Key benefits:
  1. Reduces inflammation (neutralizes free radicals via electron transfer).
  2. Improves sleep (regulates circadian rhythms and boosts melatonin).
  3. Reduces stress & anxiety (lowers cortisol levels).
  4. Enhances circulation (improves blood flow and reduces viscosity).
  5. Boosts immune system (reduces chronic inflammation and oxidative stress).
  6. Provides pain relief & muscle recovery (faster recovery for athletes).
  7. Improves energy & mood (many report feeling more energized and mentally clear).
Anecdotally, ocean immersion is one of the most effective forms, with added cold water therapy benefits in certain latitudes and seasons. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4378297/)

Limiting Nocturnal Blue (and Green) Light Exposure

Artificial blue light from devices wreaks havoc on physical and mental health. In our evolutionary past, we were exposed mainly to orange/red light from sunset onward (e.g., fire). Blue light suppresses melatonin (the sleep hormone) and disrupts circadian rhythms, tricking the brain into thinking it's daytime—leading to poor sleep, fatigue, and more. This extends to green light on the spectrum.Studies link chronic artificial light exposure at night to oxidative stress, DNA damage, and increased cancer risks (e.g., breast and prostate in night-shift workers). A 2015 PNAS study showed that using light-emitting e-readers before bed delayed sleep onset, suppressed melatonin, shifted circadian timing, and reduced next-morning alertness compared to printed books. Irregular sleep from blue light has also been tied to higher depression and mood disorder risks (JAMA Psychiatry, 2019).How to reduce exposure:
  • Use blue light filters on devices or wear blue light-blocking glasses (ideally orange-tinted; some studies suggest clear ones are less effective).
  • Dim lights and switch to warm/red-toned lighting in the evening.
  • Avoid screens 1–2 hours before bed; opt for reading a physical book or relaxation.
To offset daily artificial light, be intentional about natural sun exposure: Morning sunlight shortly after waking suppresses melatonin, boosts alertness via a healthy cortisol spike, and aligns your circadian rhythm for better focus, mood, and nighttime sleep. Low-angle sunlight in the late afternoon/early evening signals the day is ending, aiding melatonin release-especially helpful if morning light was missed. Sunlight throughout the day during winter provides much needed vitamin D.

Black Seed Oil (Nigella Sativa)

This ancient remedy has been called a healing for every disease except death. Its active component, thymoquinone, powerfully addresses inflammation, a factor in nearly all illnesses, helping maintain strength and health as part of a balanced lifestyle. Benefits:
  • Boosts immunity (anti-inflammatory, antioxidant)
  • Supports respiratory health (asthma, lung infections)
  • Helps regulate blood sugar (diabetes management)
  • Lowers blood pressure & cholesterol (heart health)
  • May have anti-cancer properties (thymoquinone inhibits tumor growth and induces cancer cell death)

Reishi Mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum)

Mushrooms are gaining attention, and Reishi ("Lingzhi") stands out for its use in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Modern science confirms its immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, and longevity-enhancing properties.Studies show Reishi can enhance chemotherapy effects, reduce side effects like fatigue and nausea (2012 Cochrane Review: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22895980/), and support cardiovascular health (Cochrane: https://www.cochrane.org/CD007259/VASC_ganoderma-lucidum-mushroom-lingzhireishi-treating-cardiovascular-risk-factors).
