Road Safety Week 2024: Supporting RTA Victims with Holistic Case Management

This week (17th to 23rd November 2024) is Brake’s Road Safety Week, which is designed to highlight the importance of road safety and remember those who have been affected by or lost their lives due to road traffic accidents (RTA). The theme of this year's week is ‘After the crash, every road victim counts’.

What is the role of a case manager?

As part of Road Safety Week, we wanted to highlight the important role case managers play when working with someone who has sustained a life-changing injury. Supporting them and their loved ones with the utmost care and compassion following an RTA is vital.

We understand that it’s an incredibly traumatic time for all involved, and supporting individuals with kindness and patience is imperative. Often people have no idea where to turn following such a horrific accident and wouldn’t know where to begin.

As case managers, it’s our role to provide constant support throughout rehabilitation and recovery; this includes providing clarity, reassurance, and direction.

Navigating life following an RTA

When we start working with someone and their family, we need to address the injured person's short- and long-term requirements. To gain a better understanding of these, one of our case managers will conduct an immediate needs assessment.

This is a vital phase in a client's journey because it gives us an accurate understanding of their situation, enabling us to ensure that the support we deliver is tailored to meet their unique needs.

Once this is complete, we can begin work on crucial elements of their recovery, which include:

  • Coordination of care
  • Rehabilitation planning
  • Practical assistance
  • Legal support.

Coordination of Care

As case managers, we act as a single point of contact. This means that as recoveries begin, loved ones don’t need to worry about having to organise and liaise with a network of various healthcare providers, legal representatives, and insurers. Our role is to organise all of this and deal with the various parties that are involved in the client’s case.

The results of a serious injury often mean that the person who has sustained it will likely require highly specialised care and support. Through our network of specialists, we ensure individuals receive tailored care to aid their recovery.

Rehabilitation

A major element of an individual’s recovery is rehabilitation. We understand how vital it is to ensure we’ve put the correct rehab plans in place to ensure the best recovery possible. This will include things like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychological support, prosthetics, and more.

What this looks like can often vary; for example, there’s some facilities that provide this all under one roof for injured individuals. However, it’s very much dependent on their needs, and everyone’s case is different.

Many people often associate rehabilitation with just the physical element; however, following a truly traumatic event like an RTA, it’s important that rehabilitation is a blend of physical, emotional, and psychological. Alongside this, our case managers provide emotional support for the individuals loved ones as they try to navigate their trauma post-incident.

In addition to this, we’re always on hand to answer any questions they may have. As we’re experienced at supporting families through this process, we understand the importance of having someone to go to for answers and support. This includes directing people to relevant charities, support groups, and more.

Practical Assistance and Legal support

Our case managers help clients with a variety of things, especially as following a serious injury, there’s so much to consider. Therefore, our practical support will include finding and organising things, like:

  • Suitable temporary and long-term living arrangements
  • Suitable care support and providers
  • Employment advice and opportunities
  • Prosthetic guidance
  • Financial planning
  • Suitable adaptive equipment and mobility aids
  • Transport solutions
  • Documentation and admin for things like benefit applications
  • And more.

Alongside this support, we’ll work with an individual’s legal team; as experienced case managers, we have strong working relationships with solicitors, allowing us to maximise outcomes. When working with a legal team, we’ll provide them with things like medical assessments and reports. We assist with building lifelong care cost reports and damages, providing a robust foundation for a legal claim.

Providing holistic and comprehensive support

There’s so much to a case manager role when supporting an individual and their loved ones through a traumatic event like an RTA; therefore, this article is a brief overview of some of our responsibilities. We understand how important it is to provide a holistic approach to case management to ensure all needs are met and catered for.

Sadly, we’ve seen and continue to see too many individuals who’ve been the victims of reckless and careless drivers. By supporting Road Safety Week, we hope Britain’s roads can become a safer space for all.
